Herbert James Draper painted Lament for Icarus in about 1898, and this Figurine depicts an event from Greek mythology.

Icarus was the son of the inventor Daedalus, and father and son had been imprisoned in a tower by King Minos of Crete, when Theseus had killed the Minotaur and escaped from the island.

Daedalus came up with a method of escape, and the inventor crafted wings for him and Icarus. Icarus was warned about flying too close to the son, but Icarus ignored this warning, and the wax holding the wings together melted.

Icarus fell to his death, and in the Lament for Icarus, nymphs mourn his death.
